COVID-19による世界的なパンデミック（コロナ）の影響で、2020年の世界経済は大きな混乱に陥り、ほとんどの国のGDPはマイナスに転じた。2020年基準で、世界全体における化石燃料由来の二酸化炭素（CO2）排出量（グローバル・排出量）は、360億tに達し、2019年比で5.1%減少した。グローバル・排出量が前年比でマイナスに転じたのは、世界金融危機に晒された 2009年以来のことである。 2020年グローバル・排出量を国別の割合で見た場合、中国が32.5%で最も高い。日本と韓国がそれぞれ3.0%と1.7％となる（図1）。コロナ影響による世界経済の停滞化を受け、日本と韓国における国全体排出量は、それぞれ、前年比6.8%と6.3%減っているのに対し、中国は1.5%増となった。
