中国には約70万km²の砂漠が存在する。主に内モンゴル自治区、新疆ウイグル自治区、甘粛省、青海省、陝西省、寧夏回族自治区など西北部の省・自治区に分布し、その合計面積は国土面積の7.3%に相当する。新疆ウイグル自治区に位置するタクラマカン砂漠の面積は33.76万km²で、国内最大規模の砂漠であると同時に、世界第2位の流動砂漠でもある。 2023年11月28日、中国政府は、タクラマカン砂漠を封じ込むための総延長3,046kmの防砂グリーンベルトが完成したと発表した。完成まで40年以上の年月を要した本事業の背景として、著しい砂漠緑化技術の発展のほか、近年砂漠地域に着目した中国の再生可能エネルギー戦略の存在も指摘する必要がある。
