Mandalay City has been facing considerable challenges in addressing environmental issues. Through a city-to-city cooperation, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies collaborated with Kitakyushu City to develop a comprehensive environmental education program to increase Mandalay citizens’ environmental stewardship.

2015年に合意された2つの国際的な取り決め、すなわち「持続可能な開発目標（SDGs）を含む持続可能な開発のための2030アジェンダ」と気候変動枠組み条約加盟国による「パリ協定」を踏まえて国際社会が目指す持続可能な社会経済実現の鍵として，「持続可能な消費と生産（SCP）」，とりわけOne Planet Living（地球一個分の暮らし）を目指す取り組みの強化を軸に、国際協力のあり方を再編成することを提案した。とくに、中長期的に目指すべき持続可能な社会を各国や地域社会で実現する取り組みのモデルづくりを支援すること、望ましい社会に向けた進展を測る共通指標を持つこと、さらに多様な取り組みの経験を、先進国と途上国という別を問わずに共有する政策対話のプラットフォームを持つことを提案した。
