Climate & SDGs Conference [Side Events]

How to synergize the Paris Agreement and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development?

20 July 2022 (10:30-12:00 CET)

This side event will reveal the evolution of government public commitments over time, country-specific challenges and opportunities linked to the energy transition, and inform which policy instruments governments can use to increase climate action (SDG 13) and offset rising inequality (SDG 10).

The Energy Policy Tracker (EPT) can track government response measures in the energy sector since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. Joachim Roth (Policy Analyst, IISD) will lead the discussion.

Satoshi Kojima (Programme Director at the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)), will discuss Japan's efforts to synergize the Paris Agreement and 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development by encouraging local municipalities to promote renewable energy and a circular economy.

Followed by presentations from Lourdes Sanchez (Senior Policy Advisor and Indonesia Lead at IISD) on the Fossil Fuel Subsidy Tracker and the importance of reporting, measuring, and monitoring fossil fuel subsidies and from Claire Potdevin (Fiscal Policy Expert at UNEP) on SDG indicator 12.c.1.

The methodology behind SDG indicator 12.c.1 was developed by UNEP in close collaboration with the IISD and OECD. These presentations will show why reforming fossil fuel subsidies is particularly important for the climate, the evolution of fossil fuel subsidies over time, and how governments can take steps towards reforming fossil fuel subsidies.
