Chapter: Chapter 1
In this volume, we seek to contribute to the understanding of how different kinds of values, which have been called “multiple values of nature” (we will use the initialism “MVN” for the purposes of this volume), are provided and maintained through sustainable use of biodiversity in socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes (SEPLS). The volume thus contributes to the pool of knowledge that will be relevant for an ongoing 'Methodological assessment regarding the diverse conceptualization of multiple values of nature and its contributions, including biodiversity and ecosystem functions and services' by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), hereinafter referred to as the 'Values Assessment'. This chapter provides a synthesis of the case studies presented in the following 11 chapters that demonstrate how integrated and holistic approaches to SEPLS management can provide intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values to bring about economic, social/cultural and ecological sustainability for both biodiversity and people.
