Insights of the Report

Taichung City aims for 17 SDGs and three phases – environmental protection, social progress and economy growth as the educational rules for the sustainable development for the year 2030 and creates three main goals including “Prosperous City with Vital Economy”, “Friendly, Livable and Happy City”and “Sustainable and Resilient Net Zero Cities”. “Sustainable Happiness, Prosperous City” has been set as the vision for Taichung City, actively making improvements of five aspects which include “finance, infrastructure”, “economy”, “environment”, and “social welfare”, signing the urgent declaration for coping with climate change, publishing 2050 Net Zero Carbon Emission Pathway, developing sustainable energy and promoting the recycling and transformation of resources so that the city can alleviate environmental pollution and carbon emissions. To accelerate urban transformation as the goal for the year 2030, Taichung City will be built as a happy sustainable city to link with international communities.

City Profile

Taichung City covers a broad total area of 2,214.9 square kilometres. Topographically, the east side of Taichung is higher than the west, and occupies 6.2% of the total area in Taiwan. According to the census of 25th December 2010, Taichung became the second largest city in Taiwan. Hence, the population growth also reflects the social increase rate. The population of Taichung City was 2,841,125 as of September 2023. Taichung City stands in the middle of the hub area of South-East Asia, being the location of Taichung Harbor and Taichung International Airport, and having the advantages of sea and sky. Taichung is now a four-hour journey to South East Asia, Japan, Korea, and the coastal cities of China. Furthermore, Taichung City is also the hub of the Taiwan High Speed Rail and is convenient for the transportation system in Taiwan. Taichung is an important production base for tools such as mechanical tools, aerospace tools, hand tools, machine tools, photoelectric panels, and the domestic bicycle industry. Through the upgrade and the transformation of industry, fine industries take the lead in purchasing and promoting industrial development related to production and components. The city government collaborates with the central government to develop Taichung as a smart city encompassing machines and mechanics. Taichung City also promotes offshore wind power, which makes Taichung Harbor an important base of wind power, building a complete wind power industry supply chain and accelerating green industry development. There are also perfect industry chain structures, such as the Central Science Industrial Park and the Processing Export Zone in Taichung, and together they make up the “Industrial Corridor of Taichung”.
