City Profile

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia's capital, strategically situated near the nation's economic core, serves as a thriving economic hub with a population of almost 2 million. The city covers diverse activities, from finance to education, benefiting around 7.8 million in the National Conurbation. Rapid development since 2000 led to a five-fold expansion of built-up areas by 2018, although land scarcity, ageing infrastructure and inequality pose challenges. Kuala Lumpur is undergoing a significant transformation with a focus on its future sustainability. The city is tackling interrelated challenges linked to urbanisation and ongoing growth. To chart a roadmap for a more sustainable future, inputs from citizens and government officials were gathered through surveys, discussions and workshops. These interactions guided the identification and prioritisation of key sustainability challenges.
