This event will be organised as part of IGES-CCET’s collaboration with ADB on improving waste management and the circular economy in Asia and the Pacific.
This online course is a capacity-building programme for Asian Development Bank (ADB) personnel and technical staff that aims to provide them with the planning knowledge and skills needed to perform their mandated functions. The ADB’s Urban Development Divisions and Country Offices will participate in this programme in their continued efforts to address solid waste management. This online course is designed to be practical and appealing to practitioners by balancing practical and theoretical knowledge using a mix of concepts and case studies (ADB/WB, etc.). Each concept will be introduced and then further elaborated on using a case study. The training is divided into three thematic areas, including the current status of municipal solid waste management (MSWM) in Asia and the Pacific, applications of waste hierarchy and circular economy principles in MSWM systems and discussions on sustainable financing and policy development. We hope that this programme will bring practitioners up to date with state-of-the-art concepts, best practices and historical trends in waste management and convey the need for waste management systems for a circular economy.

| Session 1. Municipal Solid Waste Management in Asia and the Pacific This session focuses on MSWM in Asia and the Pacific. It provides a basic introduction to the current trends and practices of MSWM in the region covering the following key points: why waste management is important; MSWM and its co-benefits (Public Health, Climate Change, SDGs, Plastic Pollution and Marine Litter), key challenges in developing and implementing SWM policies and infrastructure; and historical reasons why governments have been less invested in MSWM sector up to now. |

| Session 2. Application of Waste Hierarchy and Circular Economy This session describes various measures that are required to move from linear waste management to sustainable waste management including waste hierarchy, 4Rs and CE aspects. The discussion will focus on both opportunities and challenges in applying these new aspects into MSWM planning and implementation particularly in developing countries. Specific topics to be covered include, Integrated Solid Waste Management, 4Rs (Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), and waste hierarchy, Financing Methods including EPR based on good and failure practices (local governments / Donor driven projects) from Asia and the Pacific. SWM practitioners will addressed real challenges by sharing case studies. |

| Session 3. Financial sustainability and Policy arrangement This session discusses how to introduce the above-mentioned changes at national and local levels. For this, we will present various innovations at the national and local levels needed for such transition from the aspects of policies and institutions, finance and multi stakeholders. What are some of the production and consumption-centric issues that are relevant for waste management? Specific cases such as production/consumption-related policies are also introduced. |
