Voluntary Local Review 2021 Yokohama, Report on the Implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development

Insights of the Report

Yokohama City has long been committed to localise the SDGs. In 2018, the SDGs had already informed the city’s “Medium-Term 4-Year Plan (2018-2021).” That same year, the city was also selected as an SDG Future City, a programme by the Government of Japan to support cities’ work toward achieving the 2030 Agenda. Following these efforts, Yokohama presented its first ever Voluntary Local Review in 2021. The VLR report focuses on local efforts and how they help to advance the SDGs globally. For example, among the strategies implemented by Yokohama is the “Y-SDGs Certification System” that allows local companies to certify actions toward the SDGs through their financing and procurement systems.

City Profile

Yokohama is the capital of Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan. It is the country’s second largest city (after Tokyo). The city is located in the Kanto Region, facing Tokyo bay, and is the largest port city in the region. Yokohama is an important economic, cultural and commercial centre. Throughout its history, the city has suffered numerous natural disasters, but has risen again each time, growing more resilient. Recently, Yokohama is emphasising sustainable values to guide its future development.
