Climate Change-Proof Disaster Risk Reduction: Prospects and Challenges for Developing Countries

This chapter was aimed at development professionals and disaster risk reduction professionals who wish to integrate climate change considerations in their local level planning and practices. The chapter explores the linkages between development and disaster risks and discusses how climate change has brought additional risks to developing countries. It analyzes the existing shortcomings in disaster risk reduction and proposes means to integrate climate change concerns in disaster risk management plans. One of the means elaborated was on incorporating additional redundancy in the disaster risk management plans as a policy option and analyzes its pros and cons. It also provides a framework for local level functionaries to better understand and use the climate information in local level decision making.
