The magnitude 9.0 Sumatra Earthquake and the resulting Indian Ocean Tsunami which hit the coast of Indonesia on the 26th of December 2004 impacted over 1 million people in this country alone which was closest to the epicenter. Numerous challenges emerged in the recovery process such as soaring resource needs for rapid economic revival, creating conflicts between long term and short term interests for society. In this context, this research project aimed to identify the degree of damages and the status of recovery within protected areas affected by the Indian Ocean Tsunami. By learning from the recovery experience of Tsunami-affected countries, the study will serve as material for considerations on how to shape future international cooperation activities for protected area restoration in disaster-affected regions. The lessons extracted from the study will also serve in the recovery of protected areas of Japan which were affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami.
