COP26 に向け、多くの国がカーボンニュートラルやネットゼロ、またはそれに近い野心的な目標を掲げた。これまで目標の多くは、二酸化炭素削減(CO 2 )に焦点が当てられてきた。将来世代が温暖化による最悪の事態を避けるため、長期的にCO 2 の大幅削減を目指すのは当然である。一方で、CO 2 削減より迅速に気候変動を緩和できる可能性として、メタンなど短寿命気候汚染物質(SLCP)削減の重要性への認識も高まっている。 グローバルメタン誓約や、SLCP削減に取り組む国際パートナーシップ(CCAC)の新戦略等、今回のCOPに合わせ、米国やEUが旗振り役となり加速した国際社会のメタン排出削減の動きを紹介する。
