2023年12月、中国農業科学院傘下にある都市農業研究所(四川省・成都)が世界発の20層建て無人垂直植物工場の開発に成功したと、中央テレビ局が伝えた。20層にも重ねた巨大な培養マシーンを管理できる垂直型3次元栽培技術は、LED照明管理技術と液体養分自動供給システムによって構成され、およそ35日ごとに野菜が収穫できる。年間10回以上の連続収穫が可能で、生産量は50トン以上と推定される。この生産量は、約4ヘクタールの農地の収穫量に相当する。

冷え切った米中関係は今年11月15日に実現できた習近平国家主席とバイデン大統領の首脳会談を契機に転換期を迎えている。その証が気候変動分野の二国間協力が再開したことだ。 米中首脳会談に先立ち、両政府は14日、気候変動対策で合意した内容をまとめた共同声明を出した(23年米中気候変動声明)。声明は、両政府は「21世紀20年代気候変動アクション強化作業部会」発足させ、気候変動アクションを強化するための二国間の対話と協力を再開することを宣言し、エネルギー転換(省エネ、再エネなど)、プラスチック削減、都市間連携、森林対策、大気汚染対策など具体的な協力分野についてもリストアップした。目立つのがメタン削減分野に関する合意内容である。

再エネ事業を進めている中国大手企業の億利は9月、同国北西部の甘粛省で50万kw規模の太陽光発電所を稼動した。電力と食料を同時に供給するのが特徴である。総投資額は28・2億元(約560億円)で、敷地面積は2000ヘクタールに上る。  中国政府は2021年11月と2022年2月に、合計5億2500万kw規模の砂漠発電事業を承認した。政府が推し進める「砂漠など荒漠化エリアにおける大型風力・太陽光発電基地」の一環。国土面積の17・6%に当たる1億6880万ヘクタールの砂漠地域を活用し、電力と食料の同時供給を実現するのが狙い。
