Abstract
In striving to achieve Net-Zero, it is crucial that all stakeholders work together by leveraging their respective strengths and positions. Universities play a particularly significant role by generating scientific knowledge that underpins national and regional policies, drives technological innovation, and in disseminating that to relevant stakeholders. Against this background, the University Coalition for Achieving Carbon Neutrality (the University Coalition) was established in July 2021. The University Coalition serves as a platform for information sharing and dissemination among over 200 universities and organisations across Japan that are actively working towards Net-Zero. This seminar will discuss the role of universities in achieving Net-Zero by 2050, and explore how universities can collaborate with relevant stakeholders by sharing concrete initiatives and identifying directions to be pursued both in Japan and internationally. The event will conclude with a panel discussion featuring NextGen group members - current university and postgraduate students - who will share their expectations of universities as well as their plans for continuing activities after graduation.
Session Summary
In this seminar, following opening remarks by MEXT, two panel sessions were held. Panel 1, on “Cases and Practices,” featured universities' initiatives toward achieving net-zero, as well as the roles they play and their future perspectives. Panel 2 brought together universities and research institutes from Japan and abroad, along with youth representatives from Japan and Malaysia. The discussion reaffirmed the key roles universities play in education, research, and implementation, and emphasized the need for stronger collaboration across countries, sectors, and generations. Youth speakers expressed their desire to be more actively involved in net-zero initiatives, noting that opportunities to present in international fora such as the COP are a strong source of motivation.
Prior to the seminar, MOEJ held six meetings of the Study Group on Fostering Human Resources for Regional Decarbonization to examine how to nurture people capable of leading regional decarbonization efforts. In its closing remarks, MOEJ noted that - drawing on the day’s discussions and international insights - it will work to further develop environmental professionals who can address region-specific challenges.
