"Climate Security Challenges in the Asia-Pacific: Securing Energy, Trade and Transition" (19 March)

The Asia-Pacific region faces significant climate change challenges, particularly to its interconnected energy systems, which are increasingly vulnerable to social, environmental, economic and policy risks. These challenges threaten the region’s transition to a net-zero future, with extreme weather events damaging renewable energy infrastructure and increasing resource competition. This hybrid workshop organised by IGES and co-organised by ADBI and UNDP, will discuss the implications of climate security for the energy sector, focusing on policy strategies to mitigate risks, including the impact of global climate policies, the destruction of energy infrastructure, and geopolitical tensions around critical minerals. It will bring together policymakers, researchers and industry experts to develop strategies that integrate climate security into energy policies.

"Building Disaster-Resilient Communities - Lessons from Noto, Tohoku, and the World on Disaster Prevention and Resilience" (20 March)

The impact of climate change has led to an increase in natural disasters such as heavy rainfall worldwide, and the disaster risk faced by regional communities has become more severe. Last year, the Noto Peninsula experienced disasters caused by earthquakes and heavy rainfall, which had a significant impact on the region’s infrastructure and natural environment. The traditional way of life and culture, which has been maintained in harmony with the region’s rich natural environment, is also facing a significant crisis. In this context, it is essential to consider how to build disaster-resilient regions. Join this online symposium to explore some of the resilience projects that are undergoing in the region.
