With only five years left until 2030, accelerating the localization of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is more critical than ever. Local and regional governments play a pivotal role in implementing the SDGs. While they are expected to contribute to national and global SDG monitoring efforts, they often lack the necessary frameworks, data, and institutional support to conduct effective follow-up review (FUR). As a result, local contributions to SDG implementation risk being underrepresented in national and global reviews. Therefore, Strengthening local FUR mechanisms is essential to ensuring that the 2030 Agenda remains relevant to communities on the ground.
This webinar served to discuss practical approaches to strengthen FUR processes by integrating it into local policymaking among local municipalities, especially in Japan. The webinar also shared the experience of international cooperation to promote local FUR through Voluntary Local Reviews (VLRs).
The event also allowed to share the findings of the research “[1MF-2203] A Comparative Study on the Governance of Follow-up and Review for the achievement of the SDGs,” supported by the Environment Research and Technology Development Fund.
