Japan is a member of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA), known for its contributions to the computational modelling of acid rain and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). In line with the Ministry of the Environment's contribution to IIASA from 2011, IGES has assumed the secretariat of the national member organisation of IIASA in Japan from the same year. This year, the secretariat compiled the research results of (a) the interactions between air pollution in urban and rural Asia and the multiple development benefits of coordinated efforts, and (b) the Asian Initiative on National and Regional Decarbonisation Strategies in response to the SDGs, which was initiated in consultation with the Ministry of the Environment and IIASA in 2019. In addition, a survey was conducted on possible new joint research themes between the Ministry of the Environment and IIASA, and an outline of potential research themes was compiled, taking into account global trends and other factors, and with a view to ensuring that the research will benefit Japan and the Ministry of the Environment. Furthermore, the IIASA International Workshop was held on 17 November 2023 with the aim of disseminating the results of the above-mentioned joint research and actively exchanging information, utilising multilateral frameworks such as the East Asia Acid Deposition Monitoring Network (EANET), the Asia-Pacific Clean Air Partnership (APCAP) and Clean Air Asia (CAA).
