IGES Makes Major Contribution to the Asia-Pacific Synergies Report: Advancing Synergistic Solutions to the Triple Planetary Crisis and the SDGs
The Asia-Pacific Synergies Report: Advancing Synergistic Solutions to the Triple Planetary Crisis and the SDGs, launched in June 2026, was developed with major contributions from IGES. Prof. Kazuhiko Takeuchi, President of IGES, guided the development of the report as a Co-lead, while numerous IGES researchers participated as authors and reviewers. IGES also served as the secretariat, supporting the overall preparation process.
The Asia-Pacific Synergies Report presents strategic directions for maximising synergies in addressing interconnected challenges in the Asia-Pacific region. Additionally, the Supplementary Appendix: Compendium of Case Studies on Synergies in Asia and the Pacific was launched simultaneously, offering a practical resource that encompasses over 147 cases of illustrative actions in the region. The report served as the foundation for the Regional Programme of Action on Advancing Synergies for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific, and regional efforts aimed at implementing synergies have already begun.

IGES and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) Renew MOU to Advance their Collaboration
IGES and UNESCAP renewed their MOU on research collaboration to further strengthen their partnership towards achieving a sustainable Asia-Pacific region. This includes translating the findings of the Asia-Pacific Synergies Report into concrete actions across the region, as well as advancing regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, policy dialogues and the provision of policy recommendations through initiatives such as the implementation of the Regional Programme of Action on Advancing Synergies for Sustainable Development in Asia and the Pacific.

ISAP2026 Thematic Tracks: “From Waste to Climate Solutions: Circular Economy and Methane Action in South and Southeast Asia” (7 August)
This session brings together policymakers, researchers and practitioners from across South and Southeast Asia to discuss how we can move from commitments to implementation of circular economy models. The discussion will focus on replicable solutions, enabling policies and cross-country collaboration. It will conclude with a forward-looking dialogue on the roles of governments, businesses and communities in accelerating a just and inclusive transition.

ISAP2026: “Strengthening Local Resilience to Planetary Crises: Scaling up Synergistic Solutions” (22 July)
The International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) was held on 22 July in Kobe, Japan.
The event provided a space for researchers, policymakers and stakeholders to examine the mechanisms and approaches required to scale up local problem-solving initiatives to regional and international levels in the context of the global climate crisis. Addressing these challenges effectively requires collaborative approaches that acknowledge and integrate the heterogeneity of national contexts and cultural frameworks. IGES is committed to a methodology centered on formulating, implementing and refining evidence-based public policies, an approach that is key to enabling a fair transition toward global sustainability.

National Awareness and Training Workshop on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Lesotho (17 June)
IGES-CCET, together with government and development partners in Lesotho, convened policymakers, municipal authorities, private sector representatives, recyclers and informal waste pickers for a National Awareness and Training Workshop on Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR). Participants examined gaps in Lesotho's current waste systems, drew on regional best practices, and discussed pathways to build an inclusive, functional EPR framework with a clear role for the informal sector.

Capacity-Building and Technical Training Programme on Waste Characterization Survey Methodology to strengthen national waste governance and planning in Lesotho (15-16 June)
IGES-CCET, together with government and development partners in Lesotho, delivered technical training on Waste Characterization Survey Methodology, covering survey design, sampling and digital/AI tools. The purpose was to equip national environmental officers, municipal engineers and civil society advocates with the technical skills needed to plan, execute, analyse and report waste characterisation surveys. This workshop contributed to the data foundation for Lesotho's future EPR schemes and circular economy policies.
