Updates to the G20 Special Webpage

The G20 Leaders Summit will be held in Rio de Janeiro under the Brazilian presidency on 18 and 19 November. This Special Webpage introduces articles on the main trends and points of interest related to climate, energy, environment and sustainability, as well as related IGES publications. IGES has also been involved in drafting policy documents through the T20, an engagement group of think tanks that provides recommendations to the G20, and the webpage features a section called "Perspectives," in which our researchers share their views on these policy briefs.

IPCC Chair Jim Skea Visits IGES for an Exchange of Views with Researchers

On Tuesday, 22 October, Professor Sir Jim Skea, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Professor at Imperial College London, visited IGES's headquarters in Hayama and exchanged views with IGES researchers. Since 1999, IGES has hosted the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) Technical Support Unit (TSU). In addition, many IGES researchers, including IGES Research Advisor Mikiko Kainuma, who was inducted into the Earth Hall of Fame Kyoto this year, have been actively involved in drafting various IPCC reports. Professor Skea’s visit was made possible due to this long-standing relationship between IGES and the IPCC. Professor Skea remarked, "I have interacted with many IGES staff members over the years, but today was particularly insightful, allowing me to gain a renewed appreciation of IGES’s wide-ranging activities. I am confident that IGES will continue to play an increasingly significant role on the international stage."

Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research Johan Rockström Visits IGES and Delivers Special Lecture

On 9 October, Dr. Johan Rockström, Director of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and Professor in Earth System Science at the University of Potsdam, visited the IGES Tokyo Sustainability Forum and delivered a special lecture to IGES staff and stakeholders. This event was made possible due to the long-standing relationship at both an institutional and personal level, including collaboration between the two institutes via the Earth League, a think-tank alliance that tackles urgent challenges facing humanity, as well as IGES’s contribution to the Japanese translations of Dr. Rockström’s books, such as "Big World Small Planet: Abundance within Planetary Boundaries" and "Earth for All: A Survival Guide for Humanity: A Report to the Club of Rome (2022), Fifty Years After The Limits to Growth (1972)". In his lecture, Dr. Rockström shared the latest scientific insights on planetary boundaries and sounded the alarm on the current state of the world, pointing out that we are already halfway through the "Decisive Decade" from 2020 to 2030, which will greatly influence the future of humanity. He also introduced the newly launched "Planetary Health Check 2024" initiative.

Hybrid event "Breaking the Plastic Habit in ASEAN Countries: Project Phase II ‐ Expanding the Application of Behavioural Insights to Reduce Single-use Plastic Waste in Cities and Communities in Asia" (18 October)

Plastic reduction poses a complex societal challenge that requires behaviour changes and increased public awareness of its impacts.
