On Tuesday, 22 October, Professor Sir Jim Skea, Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and Professor at Imperial College London, visited IGES's headquarters in Hayama and exchanged views with IGES researchers.
Since 1999, IGES has hosted the IPCC Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) Technical Support Unit (TSU). In addition, many IGES researchers, including IGES Research Advisor Mikiko Kainuma, who was inducted into the Earth Hall of Fame Kyoto this year, have been actively involved in drafting various IPCC reports. Professor Skea’s visit was made possible due to this long-standing relationship between IGES and the IPCC.
During the visit, numerous IGES staff had the opportunity to engage with Professor Skea at a lunch meeting in the staff cafeteria, as well as through a series of exchange sessions. During the exchange meeting, staff members from the Climate and Energy Area, Adaptation and Water Area, Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center, City Taskforce, and the Intergovernmental Platform for Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) Taskforce on Scenarios and Models introduced their respective activities. Professor Skea remarked, “I have interacted with many IGES staff members over the years, but today was particularly insightful, allowing me to gain a renewed appreciation of IGES’s wide-ranging activities. I am confident that IGES will continue to play an increasingly significant role on the international stage.”
Going forward, IGES remains committed to fostering exchanges with scientists and researchers both in Japan and internationally, gathering and disseminating the latest scientific knowledge, and contributing to solving global environmental issues.
