The Paris Agreement states that all parties should strive to formulate and communicate long-term low greenhouse gas (GHG) emission development strategies. In addition, the outcome document on the first Global Stocktake at COP28 in 2023 indicates that deep, rapid and sustained reductions in GHG emissions are needed. It calls on Parties to contribute to the global effort, and encourages them to align their next Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) with limiting global warming to 1.5°C. In this context, Japan has been working with Asian countries to contribute to the formulation of long-term strategies and the updating of NDCs in each country, as well as to the development of more ambitious plans in cities by using the Asia-Pacific Integrated Model (AIM), which assesses policy options and presents reduction scenarios. Japan has also been supporting their implementation and scientific capacity building.
This seminar will bring together policymakers, practitioners and aid agencies from several Asian countries to present the status of science-based LTS formulation, NDC updating, implementation and capacity building. The seminar will also discuss how Asia can work to achieve a Net-Zero Asia.
