【ISAP2024】 The 16th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific “Taking an Integrated Approach to Overcome the Triple Planetary Crisis”

IGES will host the 16th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2024). This year, the Plenary Sessions will be held on Tuesday, 23 July at Pacifico Yokohama as a hybrid event, with participation in-person and online. In addition, the Thematic Tracks will be held online from July to November. ISAP is a forum where experts, international organisations, government, business and NGO representatives gather to engage in diverse discussions on sustainable development from an Asia-Pacific perspective. The overarching theme of ISAP2024 is "Taking an Integrated Approach to Overcome the Triple Planetary Crisis." The forum will delve into strategies that address the three current global crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution.
Discussions will also explore ways to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society. Recent ambitious efforts have mainly focused on achieving separate targets in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, but progress has been too slow and fragmented. In the meantime, a growing body of evidence has shown that one key way to addressing the triple planetary crisis is to identify actions for an integrated approach that maximises synergies and minimises trade-offs between the various global targets. ISAP2024 will showcase various
examples of an integrated approach including actions taken at the local level, efforts by the business community, and youth initiatives. This year’s ISAP will invite high-level speakers including Luis Gomez-Echeverri, Emeritus Research Scholar at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and Anne Larigauderie, Executive Secretary, Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES).

Update of the special page of “IGES Support activity for Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF)”

In the run-up to COP29 in November, IGES has updated its feature page on research related to the Enhanced Transparency Framework (ETF). The ETF was established under Article 13 of the Paris Agreement (PA) and requires all Parties to report their climate actions and support toward implementing and achieving their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) targets every two years. In this update, we have added contents about the Mutual Learning Program for Enhanced Transparency (MLP). Outputs from the MLP can be used as a basis for actual reporting on the ETF.

EU-Japan Subnational Climate Action Workshop : Exchanges between Cities in Europe and Japan - Opportunities for a Resilient Future (29-30 May)

The European Union (EU) and Japan formed a Green Alliance in 2021 to accelerate their respective transition towards a climate-neutral, circular and resource-efficient economy over the coming decades. The alliance has been seen as an important commitment for the implementation of the European Green Deal and Japan’s Green Growth Strategy. To further this commitment, the Delegation of the European Union to Japan and IGES organised a workshop on 29 and 30 May aiming to facilitate exchange between EU and Japanese cities through sharing good practices and solutions taken by leading cities. This workshop contributed to the discussion on how the EU and Japan can enhance cooperation at the city level in order to meet the shared goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.
