【ISAP2024】 The 16th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific “Taking an Integrated Approach to Overcome the Triple Planetary Crisis”

Press Release
ISAP2024

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) will host the 16th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2024). This year, the Plenary Sessions will be held on Tuesday, 23 July 2024 at Pacifico Yokohama as a hybrid event, with participation in-person and online. In addition, the Thematic Tracks will be held online from July to November 2024.

ISAP is a forum where experts, international organisations, government, business and NGO representatives gather to engage in diverse discussions on sustainable development from an Asia-Pacific perspective. The overarching theme of ISAP2024 is "Taking an Integrated Approach to Overcome the Triple Planetary Crisis." The forum will delve into strategies that address the three current global crises: climate change, biodiversity loss, and environmental pollution. Discussions will also explore ways to accelerate the transition towards a sustainable society.

Recent ambitious efforts have mainly focused on achieving separate targets in line with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Paris Agreement and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, but progress has been too slow and fragmented. In the meantime, a growing body of evidence has shown that one key way to addressing the triple planetary crisis is to identify actions for an integrated approach that maximises synergies and minimises trade-offs between the various global targets. ISAP2024 will showcase various examples of an integrated approach including actions taken at the local level, efforts by the business community, and youth initiatives. This year’s ISAP will also consider how integration can influence a wider range of decisions in the Asia-Pacific and pave the way for transformative change globally.

About International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP)
As the world's most populous region, Asia needs to be at the forefront of efforts to achieve a rapid transformation. Held annually since 2009, ISAP has two major objectives — first, it facilitates information-sharing and discussion among a broad range of interested stakeholders, deepening mutual trust and strengthening cooperation. Secondly, the forum gives the general public a chance to discover the progress being made in the global debate on environmental issues, and introduces them to the latest research trends. ISAP encourages wide-ranging collaborative efforts to create the groundwork for building a sustainable society. In particular, it provides a forum for practical information-gathering and networking, targeting local government officials who deal with environmental issues, corporate officials carrying out research and collecting the latest information in investor relations or sustainability departments, as well as media representatives pursuing the impact of international discussions on Japan and reporting on the gap between Japan and the rest of the world.
