COP28 Special Webpage Updates: IGES Experts Highlight Priority Issues

From 30 November through 12 December, the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) and diverse non-state actors from around the world will come together in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the UN Climate Change Conference (COP28). On the COP28 Special Webpage, IGES experts weigh in on priority issues such as the Global Stocktake, health, and youth empowerment. The 15th International Forum on Sustainable Asia and the Pacific [ISAP2023]

IGES' annual International Forum on Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2023) will be held this year on 19 December at Pacifico Yokohama and online. Plenary Sessions in the morning will feature a keynote speech by Hans Joachim Schellnhuber, Director Emeritus of the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research (PIK), who will become Director General of the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) this December. This will be followed by a discussion among the invited experts on current top priorities and socio-economic system changes. There will then be a
discussion with leaders from IGES research units, who will explore the possibilities and limitations of specific policy and institutional reforms that will be important in the future. Parallel sessions in the afternoon will cover a wide range of topics, including the introduction of an integrated approach to realising a decentralised society, the 'Circulating and Ecological Sphere (CES)', discussion about the key issues and challenges of climate security in the Asia-Pacific, air pollution initiatives in India with the country’s remarkable economic growth, and the implications of the IPBES Assessment of Invasive Alien Species for Asia.

SDGs International Forum for Biodiversity

The Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework, containing new global goals on biodiversity, was adopted at the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD-COP15) held in December 2022. The SDGs International Forum for Biodiversity sought appropriate ways to implement SDGs at the local level (Circulating and Ecological Sphere) with residents and business sectors in Hyogo Prefecture through sharing the latest domestic and international trends toward the realisation of a nature-positive society and exchanging advanced initiatives and knowledge on biodiversity as a local issue. The international forum also highlighted the importance of developing initiatives between regions and integrated approaches to global issues, including biodiversity.

Unlocking the Potential of VLRs: Building Sustainable Cities through Local Action and Follow-up and Review Processes

The session facilitated knowledge exchange and shared best practices on utilising VLRs for local-level follow-up and review processes of the 2030 Agenda. Participants gained practical insights into implementing VLRs and their impact on local sustainable development. Experts led discussions on methodologies, data collection, stakeholder engagement and lessons learned, fostering interactive Q&A and peer-to-peer knowledge sharing. The session inspired innovative approaches, providing practical tools and recommendations for enhancing follow-up and review processes using VLRs.

High Level Talks: Towards Smart, Zero-Carbon and Climate-Resilient Cities in Malaysia and Japan

The mayors of Malaysia’s major cities gathered at the IGES Tokyo Sustainability Forum to share the latest news on climate sustainability. They described their initiatives to realise smart, zero-carbon and climate-resilient cities, and whether they saw any possibilities to collaborate with the key stakeholders in this space. In the session, the Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) introduced an initiative to promote decarbonisation and energy security in an integrated manner, and Saitama City introduced a case study of urban development in the Misono District. In addition, Takasago Construction shared a pioneering case of circular wood utilisation as an exemplary initiative in the private sector.
