2023年12月、中国農業科学院傘下にある都市農業研究所(四川省・成都)が世界発の20層建て無人垂直植物工場の開発に成功したと、中央テレビ局が伝えた。20層にも重ねた巨大な培養マシーンを管理できる垂直型3次元栽培技術は、LED照明管理技術と液体養分自動供給システムによって構成され、およそ35日ごとに野菜が収穫できる。年間10回以上の連続収穫が可能で、生産量は50トン以上と推定される。この生産量は、約4ヘクタールの農地の収穫量に相当する。
