IGES and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA) Renew MOU to Advance their Collaboration

On 24 December 2025, IGES and ERIA renewed their Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on research collaboration. IGES and ERIA have been partners since first signing an MOU in January 2021, contributing to the advancement of sustainable resource circulation and environmental policies in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and East Asia through research collaboration on the circular economy and prevention of marine plastic pollution. Building on this long-standing partnership, under the updated MOU, the two institutes will advance knowledge sharing through collaborative research, joint publications, and the co-organisation of seminars and symposia.

Sustainability Talk - G7 France 2026: Environmental Leadership, Climate Security and Critical Minerals (12 February)

This online session will take place in the context of the French Republic's Presidency of the Group of Seven (G7) in 2026, and the discussion will address emerging systemic risks, recognising that accelerating ecological stress and climate change are increasingly intertwined with economic vulnerability and climate security. Participants are invited to join this timely exchange to engage with leading policy perspectives and contribute to an informed discussion on shared challenges and priorities.

APCS International Symposium - Climate Security in the Asia Pacific under a Shifting Geopolitical Context (21-22 January)

This symposium brought together relevant international researchers and policymakers to discuss the challenges and opportunities of climate security and examine its continued relevance under a shifting geopolitical landscape in the Asia-Pacific region. Over 600 people from more than 60 different countries joined the event, highlighting the importance and interest of climate security under the current geopolitical context. The event reaffirmed that the field of climate security needs to shift toward a disciplined, evidence-based policy domain grounded in rigorous research, regional cooperation and institutional clarity, in order to effectively manage complex climate-security risks and contribute to long-term regional and global stability.

Final Workshop of the Project "Development of the capacity of the informal waste sector in Cambodia" (22 December)

This workshop served as a platform to strengthen official recognition of the informal waste sector and share experiences and lessons learned from the partnership between IDEA, Battambang Municipality, COMPOSTED, and IGES-CCET regarding the establishment of an informal sector registration system in Cambodia. The goal was to strengthen stakeholder engagement and foster official recognition of informal workers as key actors in the waste value chain and encourage collaboration between the public and private sectors to identify sustainable, inclusive solutions.

Final Project Dissemination Workshop on Integrated Policy Solutions and City Models to End Open Waste Burning in Lao PDR (18 December)

This workshop presented a comprehensive policy framework for ending open burning in Lao PDR and the broader Asian region, strengthening cross-sectoral coordination among government agencies, international partners and village-level authorities. The event showcased city pilot models and lessons learned from regional successes in Cambodia, India and the Philippines, and served as a space to disseminate the Regional Roadmap to End Open Burning of Waste for Asia, highlighting its relevance to regional air quality and climate goals. There was also a presentation on the Policy Recommendations Report for Lao PDR, which advocates for mainstreaming OWB prevention into existing national policies.
