IGES Launches the Integrative Strategic Research Programme for the 9th Phase (ISRP9)

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies has launched its 9th Phase Integrative Strategic Research Programme for the next four years, effective from 1 July 2025. IGES will continue to strengthen collaboration with various sectors and stakeholders to address key issues in sustainable development by taking an integrated approach to environmental, social and economic challenges. As a sustainability think tank, IGES will also actively disseminate policy recommendations based on research findings to promote the creation of synergies oriented to transformation toward a sustainable society.

IGES and KEI Renew MOU to Advance their Collaboration

IGES and the Korea Environment Institute (KEI) renewed their partnership with a new Memorandum of Understanding on 5 June 2025, during the KEI Global Forum on Jeju Island. The two institutes have collaborated since 2003 on sustainable development, climate change and environmental challenges. Their joint work includes the ASEAN Climate Change Strategy Action Plan, China-Japan-Korea decarbonisation studies and the Asia-Pacific Climate Change Adaptation Platform. The renewed agreement will expand their collaboration through joint research, publications, staff exchanges, and shared participation in meetings and symposia.

17th International Forum on Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2025) Plenary Sessions, Interactive Sessions, Poster Sessions and Networking Sessions (29 July)
 IGES will host ISAP2025 at Pacifico Yokohama (hybrid format with online participation) under the main theme of “Our World in Flux: How to Shape a Sustainable Future through Just Transition”. A growing number of speakers, including high-level policymakers and leading researchers, have confirmed their participation.
Five plenary sessions, featuring leading experts from around the world, will focus on strengthening synergy to address sustainability challenges in an integrated manner and achieving a just transition that leaves no one behind. During the lunch break, there will be poster sessions introducing IGES research and activities, as well as a networking space for participants to get connected. Additionally, two interactive sessions will be held to discuss environmental and sustainability issues with young participants. We encourage you to join us at the venue to interact with speakers and participants and engage in real-world discussions.

Workshop on 1.5°C Lifestyles in Kitakyushu 2025 - Want to try a practical cooking class that helps mitigate global warming? (1-18 August)
 IGES has held a series of “Workshops on 1.5°C Lifestyles” in various cities in Japan, in which participants learn about climate change and the Paris Agreement as well as practical ways to reduce GHG emissions in everyday life. The fifth workshop in this series, “Workshop on 1.5°C Lifestyles in Kitakyushu 2025” will be held in August in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, with a focus on food. This workshop has been co-organised with Kitakyushu Youth Station, and invites the participation of a wide range of students, from junior high school, high school, vocational college, university and postgraduate programmes, as they will become the future leaders of local society.
