The Paris Agreement, an international treaty on climate change, aims to limit the average global temperature increase to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. To achieve this, carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions must be reduced to net zero by around 2050. Reaching this ambitious goal not only requires measures by governments and companies but also citizens need to make changes to their own consumption behaviour.
IGES has held a series of “Workshops on 1.5°C Lifestyles*” in various cities in Japan, in which participants learn about climate change and the Paris Agreement as well as practical ways to reduce GHG emissions in everyday life. The fifth workshop in this series, “Workshop on 1.5°C Lifestyles* in Kitakyushu 2025” will be held in August in Kitakyushu City, Fukuoka Prefecture, with a focus on food. This workshop has been co-organised with Kitakyushu Youth Station, and invites the participation of a wide range of students, from junior high school, high school, vocational college, university and postgraduate programmes, as these are the young people will become the future leaders of local society.
The workshop comprises the following three steps.
First workshop:
Environmental experts will give lectures and presentations. Participants will learn about the status of climate change, the goal of the Paris Agreement and the concept of carbon footprint, as well as finding out ways to make changes in their food and lifestyle choices to contribute to achieving the global emissions reduction goal.
1.5°C Lifestyle Challenge at home:
Referring to the ‘1.5°C Lifestyle Options Catalogue’, the participants will select and try out lifestyle choices that reduce greenhouse gas emissions for 10 days, with a focus on food.
Second workshop:
Using insights from the previous workshop and applying what they learnt from taking up lifestyle challenges at home, participants will work in groups to develop ideas for a society where people make choices to put a 1.5°C lifestyle into practice. Guest speakers from youth groups will also be invited to talk about their social projects to make food products with non-marketable vegetables.
Furthermore, a Food Loss Reduction Meister from Fukuoka Prefecture will teach participants how to cook using recipes that help reduce food loss and curb GHG emissions.
*What is the 1.5°C lifestyle?
The 1.5°C Lifestyle is a lifestyle which will enrich people’s lives while reducing greenhouse gases, the cause of global warming. 1.5°C is the target of the Paris Agreement, which aims to limit the increase in the average global temperature to 1.5°C below the pre-industrial levels.
