Advancing Article 6 of the Paris Agreement: 4th Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Global Partnership Meeting (GPM) held in Tokyo

The 4th Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) Global Partnership Meeting was held in Tokyo from 17 to 19 February, organised by the Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership Center, for which IGES serves as secretariat, in collaboration with the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ). Representatives from governments and implementing agencies of 19 JCM partner countries attended, sharing progress and challenges in their respective countries. Discussions focused on promoting project development, scaling up credit issuance, enhancing implementation efficiency, and strengthening public-private collaboration.

IGES at Earth Day Tokyo 2025

IGES will once again have a booth at Earth Day Tokyo, a free outdoor festival held in Yoyogi Park, Tokyo on Saturday 19 and Sunday 20 April (10:00-18:00). The festival features a wide range of activities focused on eco-friendly living, organic products and renewable energy. The IGES booth will showcase our recent research publications and posters, and IGES staff members will be on site so please stop by for a chance to discuss various global environmental issues.

"Climate Security Challenges in the Asia-Pacific: Securing Energy, Trade and Transition" (19 March)

This hybrid workshop, organised by IGES and co-organised by ADBI and UNDP, discussed the implications of climate security for the energy sector, with a focus on policy strategies to mitigate risks, including the impact of global climate policies, the destruction of energy infrastructure and geopolitical tensions surrounding critical minerals. Policymakers, researchers and industry experts engaged in productive discussions relevant to the urgent climate and energy issues to develop strategies for integrating climate security into energy policy across the region.
Moving forward, IGES efforts aim at ensuring a climate-secure Asia-Pacific. To do so, the Institute will continue conducting agency-oriented research and organising events that reflect and advance its commitment.

"How Japan’s Experience will be able to Contribute to the IPCC Special Report on Climate Change and Cities" (19 March)

In conjunction with the first Lead Authors Meeting (LAM1) of SR-Cities, the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), and the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) organised a public seminar on Japan’s contributions to the SR-Cities. The event brought together experts participating in LAM1, local government officials in Japan, and other stakeholders. Co-organised by IGES and the City of Yokohama, the seminar also introduced the outcomes of joint research conducted by Japan and IIASA, and explored synergies between climate change and other key policy areas.

"Launch of the OECD Environmental Performance Review of Japan" (21 March)

The Ministry of the Environment, Japan, in collaboration with the City of Yokohama, held this public event coinciding with the release of the OECD Environmental Performance Review of Japan, to promote awareness of the report previously published by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) on Japan's efforts in the field of environmental conservation.

"Redefining Food Security in the Asia-Pacific - Integrating food security with climate change and development" (26 March)

Food security is commonly defined by four pillars (availability, accessibility, utilisation and stability) and this webinar explored the content and significance of integrating three additional dimensions: sustainability, agency and resilience, drawing from the working paper "Redefining Food Security in the Asia-Pacific". A panel of experts in food security, climate change and development discussed key insights and future prospects for enhancing food security in the region, aiming to integrate human security and climate security approaches while incorporating these three dimensions into the conventional food security framework.

"Exploring Nature Positive Futures" (27 March)
 IGES, the University of Tokyo, Environmental Systems Research Committee and Japan Society of Civil Engineering co-organised an open symposium centred on the Nature Positive goal. The event, framed under the S-21 Project and supported by MOEJ and IPBES Scenarios and Models Taskforce, provided an opportunity to share the latest research findings and experiences by inviting leading researchers in this field from different parts of the world.

Tune in to "About Sustainability," the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) podcast. In this episode, So-Young Lee (Research Manager, Integrated Sustainability Centre) and Dwayne Appleby (Programme Manager, Sustainable Consumption and Production team) delve into the shift towards a sustainable and decarbonised society from an inclusive and equitable perspective, known as the just transition.
