UPCOMING EVENTS
APFSD Side Event "Promoting Synergistic Approaches in Asia and the Pacific: Addressing the Triple Planetary Crisis" (20 February)

The world is confronting a triple planetary crisis, due to the interrelation of climate change, biodiversity loss, and pollution. These interlinked issues are putting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in jeopardy, and as such, it is essential to take a synergistic approach to make sure goals are kept on track, entailing collaborative work across various sustainable development aspects. Japan is proposing a resolution on "Promoting synergistic approaches to address the triple crisis on climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution and support sustainable development" for the Sixth session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6). This initiative aims to encourage Asia-Pacific nations to expedite their progress in climate-related and other environmental SDGs through coordinated actions. A forthcoming side event at the Asia-Pacific Forum on Sustainable Development (APFSD) will discuss key questions about promoting synergies in the region, developing effective planning and reporting frameworks, and sharing best practices in synergising SDGs. This event will be particularly important for addressing the challenges posed by the triple crisis and aligns with the 2030 Agenda, the Paris Agreement, and the Global Biodiversity Framework, promoting synergy-focused strategies among Asia-Pacific countries.

IPBES Symposium "Transformative Change and Behavioural Change towards Nature Positive Society" (26 February)

Ecosystems supported by rich biodiversity are the foundation of our society, economy, livelihoods and culture, providing a variety of benefits and contributing to human well-being. This symposium will provide information on Japan’s National Biodiversity Strategy 2023-2030 and will feature discussions by domestic and international experts on how we can bring about transformative change based on the latest scientific discussions by the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), with particular focus on the specifics of transformative and behavioural changes as set out in the national strategy, and what actions are needed to realise these changes.

Seminar on City-to-City Collaboration for Zero Carbon Society (26 February)

Cities currently account for approximately 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions. In order to achieve the Paris Agreement’s 1.5 °C target, cities must accelerate the transition to a decarbonised society, and address various urban issues such as environmental pollution and circular economy in an integrated manner. IGES supports decarbonisation initiatives in cities in developing countries through knowledge-sharing and technical cooperation under the "City-to-City Collaboration Program for Zero Carbon Society (C3P)" by the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ). In this seminar, cities participating in C3P will share the significance of working in partnership to address local decarbonisation and build momentum for the expansion and horizontal deployment of integrated climate action at the city level. The seminar will also feature a mutual learning session, and a site visit to a decarbonisation leading area (DLA).

International Symposium: Japan's Contribute to the 7th Assessment Cycle of IPCC and Collaboration with IIASA on "Climate Change and Cities" (28 February)

Responding to the increasing attention on the impacts of climate change on cities and their unique challenges and opportunities in mitigation and adaptation, the IPCC has decided to develop a Special Report on Climate Change and Cities in the IPCC’s Seventh Assessment Report (AR7) cycle from 2023 to 2028. Leveraging the collaborative relationship established last year with the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) and the Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ), IGES has initiated a joint research project on city transformation. This symposium aims to present the research findings from this collaborative project and will feature discussions about Japan's contributions to decarbonising urban environments.
