COP28 Expert Perspectives and Side Events

This year's UN Climate Change Conference (COP28) in Dubai, United Arab Emirates was convened from 30 November to 12 December 2023. On the COP28 Special Webpage, IGES experts highlighted additional issues such as nature-based solutions and methane emission monitoring. IGES was involved both on-site and online in
official side events, as well as side events at the Japan Pavilion, exploring issues such as international collaboration toward a net-zero and resilient ASEAN, climate-biodiversity-SDGs synergies,
Paris Agreement Article 6 implementation, early warning systems for loss and damage, and the circular economy.

Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center Now Fully Operational and Ready to Support Capacity Building

IGES is proud to announce the start of operations for the Paris Agreement Article 6 Implementation Partnership (A6IP) Center. The A6IP Center is committed to delivering sustainable support tailored to the diverse requirements of countries and
institutions participating in the A6IP. It is actively formulating a Support Package as a key component of its capacity-building assistance to help partner countries effectively implement Article 6.

IGES Climate Security Webpage Now Open

To comprehensively analyse and scrutinise climate security, particularly its implications concerning Japan and the Asia-Pacific region, IGES is initiating the Asia-Pacific Climate Security Project (APCW), supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
of Japan. This dedicated page on climate security serves as a repository for research
findings and pertinent information. The webpage will explore various topics, including analysis of international trends, energy security, food security, climate-induced human mobility, climate adaptation and humanitarian development, ocean security and more. It aims to foster discussions from multifaceted viewpoints, offering valuable insights into these critical issues.

The 15th International Forum on Sustainable Asia and the Pacific [ISAP2023]

IGES will host the 15th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2023). This year, the Plenary Sessions will be held on Tuesday, 19 December 2023 at Pacifico Yokohama as a hybrid event, with participation in-person and online. In addition, the Thematic Tracks will be held online from
December 2023 through January 2024. In the foyer of Pacifico Yokohama, there will be an exhibition of posters created by IGES researchers, featuring
their research and activities. This year, as a special programme, young researchers from local junior high schools and high schools have also been invited to exhibit posters. This is a great opportunity to interact with session speakers, prominent researchers,
frontline practitioners, future leaders and other relevant stakeholders, who will gather at ISAP. We hope that participants will make the most of the poster session and other sessions at ISAP to exchange opinions and information.

LCS-RNet 14th Annual Meeting "Further steps towards Net Zero: Ways to accelerate stakeholder collaboration between citizens, policymakers and researchers"

On 18-19 December 2023, the Leveraging a Climate-neutral Society Strategic Research Network (LCS-RNet) will hold its 14th Annual Meeting online. Under the main theme "Further steps towards Net Zero: Accelerating stakeholder collaboration between citizens, policymakers, researchers", this annual meeting
will feature two keynote speeches and four thematic sessions by leading experts.The keynotes will feature two topics: demand-side measures and climate citizens' assemblies. Thematic sessions will cover forestry, consensus-building through public engagement, modelling to aid national low-carbon strategies and the role of science in sustainability.

IGES Activities at the Better Air Quality (BAQ) Conference 2023

The Better Air Quality (BAQ) conference 2023, the largest and most prestigious air quality gathering in Asia, was held on 15-17 November 2023, with pre-events on 13-14 November, at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) headquarters in Manila, Philippines. Several IGES experts participated in pre-events as well as side events, and contributed to knowledge-sharing on issues
ranging from integrated action planning, methane and black carbon in the waste management sector, and synergies between air quality improvement and the SDGs. At the BAQ conference, IGES demonstrated its ability to contribute to science-based air quality management and experience from different areas necessary to make Asia cleaner and more sustainable, including but not limited to climate and energy, waste management and health.

Breaking the Plastic Habit in Asia: A Public Dialogue On the Application of Behavioural Insights

Co-hosted by IGES and the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), this event was a groundbreaking initiative that focused on the application of behavioural insights to address the issue of plastic waste. Drawing expertise from psychology, cognitive science and social science, the event provided a comprehensive roadmap to drive transformative changes in community behaviour towards sustainable, low-waste practices. The event
was marked by the sharing of real-world case studies from a recent Asia-Pacific project. Teams from Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines and Viet Nam shared their success stories in implementing behavioural interventions, leading to tangible reductions in plastic consumption. These examples served as a beacon, shedding light on the effectiveness of such strategies. Attendees, including practitioners, educators and policymakers, were equipped with actionable tools and strategies. The event emphasised the pivotal role of behavioural insights in shaping effective waste reduction strategies, particularly in Asian cities and communities.

Study Workshop on Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) and Environmental Education (EE)

IGES Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (IGES-CCET) in Japan and the University of Danang - University of Science and Education in Viet Nam have been collaboratively undertaking research and initiatives on education for sustainable development (ESD) and environmental education (EE). To facilitate knowledge exchange and mutual learning, IGES-CCET, the University of Danang and the Yokohama CITYNET Project Office jointly organised a study workshop on 8 November in
Yokohama. Participants emphasised the importance of adopting a Whole School Approach (WSA) to transition from a teaching-centred to a learning-centred framework, responding to evolving global sustainability challenges. They discussed the need for holistic efforts beyond curriculum changes, addressing the needs of students, teachers, staff and the wider community. Participants also stressed the significance of collaborative actions within schools, as well as the need to foster connections within neighbourhoods and communities to improve student learning, behaviour and overall well-being.
