Launch of special webpage for "High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2023"

The 2023 High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) will take place from 10 - 19 July under the theme of "Accelerating the recovery from the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) and the full implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development at all levels." The HLPF will provide a platform to discuss how countries and other stakeholders are moving past the pandemic and reinvigorating efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This year’s HLPF comes at a critical juncture as the world will pass the midway point on the 2030 Agenda on Sustainable Development (2030 Agenda) and its SDGs. In-depth reviews will be conducted on SDGs 6, 7, 9, 11 and 17, with 40 countries presenting their voluntary national reviews. HLPF will also support preparations for the SDG Summit in September 2023. IGES special webpage on HLPF2023 will highlight IGES-related publications and side events.

New Reports Added to the VLR Lab (February - May)

IGES manages the VLR Lab, an online platform offering comprehensive information about local government actions on the SDGs. The Voluntary Local Review (VLR) is an international initiative in which local governments conduct their own evaluation of actions on the SDGs and publish the results as a report comparable with other local governments. From February through May the VLR Lab received reports from Tampere (Finland), Barcelona (Spain), Ghent (Belgium), Stuttgart (Germany) and Gladsaxe (Denmark).

PAST EVENTS
Climate & Energy Webinar Series "IGES Perspective on the G7 Hiroshima Summit Outcomes"

The webinar featured perspectives from IGES researchers on the outcomes of G7 Hiroshima Leaders' Communiqué in climate change and energy, biodiversity, and resource efficiency and circular economy areas. While the G7 Hiroshima Leaders' Communiqué emphasised the need for "various pathways" towards achieving net-zero, the presentation underlined that the range of pathways compatible with the 1.5°C goal is narrow. Regarding biodiversity, this webinar addressed that the G7 members signalled their intention to lead global efforts in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) which has now entered the action phase. The webinar also highlighted that resource efficiency and circular economy has been reaffirmed from the perspective of source security. The Circular Economy and Resource Efficiency Principles (CEREP), a common set of guidelines proposed by Japan and adopted at the G7 Ministers’ Meeting on Climate, Energy and Environment in Sapporo, were highlighted as one of the major outcomes.

SB58 Side Event "Regional GST: Impacts, Challenges and Opportunities"

This webinar featured representatives from the iGST regional hubs who shared the crucial role played by non-state actors (NSAs) in the Global Stocktake (GST) process. NSAs can contribute work on translating GST outputs into regional and national contexts, and providing concrete actions and support for countries in the region. In the panel discussion, participants stressed that NSAs can contribute to the GST, through directly engaging with governments, putting pressure on policymakers to push for laws backed with concrete evidence and research, and promoting climate action initiatives and campaigns on the ground.
