Malaysia and Japan have enjoyed solid and friendly cooperation for many years. This has recently been elevated by the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership” agreed upon in December 2023. Under the partnership, the two nations have renewed their respective commitments to promote sustainable development and tackle climate change. This shows the two nations will continue to cooperate in accelerating the energy transition journey to decarbonisation and achieving net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
The city to city collaboration between Kuala Lumpur City Hall, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Saitama City, is a successful example that signifies the importance of international collaboration between local governments for the aforementioned national commitment. All three are known for their strategies to become smart, zero carbon and climate resilient. The three cities’ partnership have encouraged technology transfer, capacity building, knowledge sharing, and awareness raising, among their respective governments, academia, the private sector and citizens. The knowledge shared between the cities were focused on buildings and urban systems and encompass a wide variety of areas such as policies for promoting energy efficiency, low carbon infrastructure, and switching to clean and low emission technologies, as well as examples of their means of implementation.
This event will reflect on the progress and impact of the partnership on the efforts of three cities as they participate in the initiative and work towards international cooperation, focusing on their respective measures to achieve zero carbon and enhance climate resilience. Additionally, it will explore effective strategies for transitioning from traditional construction materials to low-carbon alternatives, drawing insights from experts on sustainable buildings in Malaysia.
Through this event, we aim to share the example of international cooperation by these three cities with other municipalities within and beyond ASEAN, fostering the development of smart, zero-carbon, and climate-resilient cities.
