UNEP Executive Director and Director of UNEP’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific visited IGES for an Exchange of Views

On 14 October, Inger Andersen, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations and Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Dechen Tsering, Director of UNEP’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific visited IGES Tokyo Sustainability Forum for a meeting to discuss strengthening collaboration in addressing global environmental issues. Discussions covered expanding collaboration on waste management and circular economy challenges, including plastic pollution, with the two organisations reaffirming their continued partnership in areas of mutual interest.

South Asia Unites to End Open Waste Burning: Kathmandu Declaration Finalised
 On 6-7 September, IGES and the Climate and Clean Air Coalition (CCAC) held a high-level regional policy dialogue in Kathmandu, Nepal, where participants adopted the Kathmandu Declaration on Transformative Action to End Open Burning of Waste in South Asia. This declaration opens the door to a new era in South Asia--where waste is no longer burned but managed responsibly, communities breathe clean air, and regional solidarity drives environmental justice, public health and climate resilience.

Sustainability Talk: Sustainable Fuels as a Priority at COP30 (28 October)
 IGES invited João Marcos Paes Leme, Director of the Energy Department at Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to provide an in-depth perspective on the Belém Commitment for Sustainable Fuels (“Belém 4x”) and its implications for the global energy transition. This webinar explored how this initiative seeks to secure international support to accelerate the shift towards cleaner alternatives such as hydrogen, biofuels and synthetic fuel, addressing why sustainable fuels are not only vital for decarbonisation but also for achieving equitable growth, enhancing energy security, and realising COP30’s vision of a just and inclusive energy transition.
