IGES and Hachinohe City Sign Cooperation Agreement to Address Climate Change and Achieve the Sustainable Development Goals

IGES and Hachinohe City are delighted to announce the signing of a Basic Agreement of Cooperation. This Agreement represents a commitment to collaboratively address climate change and achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Under the Agreement, Hachinohe City will provide IGES and partners with valuable data pertaining to the health and other benefits of climate change policies. IGES will then conduct a thorough analysis of which policies can maximise those benefits. The insights derived from that analysis will help IGES develop reports that recommend how climate policies can improve the health and well-being of residents in Hachinohe City.

Thematic Tracks of the 15th International Forum on Sustainable Asia and the Pacific [ISAP2023]

IGES hosted the 15th International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP2023), with Plenary Sessions and Parallel Sessions held on 19 December. ISAP is a forum where experts, international organisations, government, business and NGO representatives active in Japan and the Asia-Pacific region gather to engage in diverse discussions on sustainable development in the region. Some Thematic Tracks will be held in January.

Thematic Tracks 4 "How does Climate Governance Accelerate Net-Zero Transition in Developing Countries?"

25 January, JST 18:00 - 19:20 (GMT+09:00)
Given the enhanced understanding of the climate crisis, there is growing momentum to declare and legislate net-zero greenhouse gas targets by 2050 and to increase the ambition of nationally determined contributions through 2030. This session will share and solicit input on an analytical framework capable of assessing the relative importance of key governance elements needed for a net-zero transition in developing countries. Additionally, it will explore the challenges, barriers and needs for governing climate actions to transition onto a net-zero pathway in Asia.

Thematic Tracks 3 "SEPLS Management as Integrated, Inclusive and Localised Actions towards a Nature Positive Society"

29 January, JST 14:00 - 15:30 (GMT+09:00)
The discussion in this session will focus on how the 'socio-ecological production landscapes and seascapes' (SEPLS) can promote integrated, inclusive and local action towards a sustainable society, in particular a nature-positive society, in the context of biodiversity conservation and restoration.

"International Symposium on Climate Security in Asia-Pacific" 8 February, JST13:00 - 19:00 (GMT+9:00)

The significance of considering climate change from a security and diplomatic perspective has yet to be fully explored in the policy arena and on-the-ground actions. The interwoven nature of this nexus demands that policymakers be equipped with informed decision-making approaches to shape efficient policies. This international symposium on climate security in Asia-Pacific, to be held on 8 February, invites experts from Japan and abroad to strengthen the understanding of the necessary interventions needed in this dynamic policy area and to design research directions on how to respond to these challenges. This symposium will facilitate discussions on the current issues within five themes; energy security, food security, climate-induced mobilities, climate change adaptation and maritime security and unravel the complex dynamics among them. Through these discussions, we aim to gain insight into the relationship between climate change and security and possible policy responses.
