Submission to Policy Process
The Methane Reduction Roadmap for Cambodia sets out a strategic plan to cut methane emissions and align with global climate goals, including the Global Methane Pledge and Cambodia’s Long-Term Strategy for Carbon Neutrality. Developed by the Ministry of Environment with support from IGES and CCAC, the roadmap targets three major sectors—agriculture, waste, and energy—which account for the bulk of methane emissions in the country.
Key highlights:
- Why it matters: Methane is over 80 times more potent than CO₂ over 20 years, making its reduction one of the fastest ways to slow climate change.
- Current situation: Agriculture contributes ~65% of methane emissions, followed by waste (~20%) and energy (~15%).
- Action plan:
- Agriculture: Promote practices like alternate wetting and drying (AWD) in rice cultivation, improved livestock feed, biogas from manure, and agroforestry.
- Waste: Eliminate open dumping, enhance landfill gas capture, expand composting and anaerobic digestion, and improve wastewater treatment.
- Energy: Transition from charcoal and coal to renewables, improve energy efficiency, and promote electric vehicles.
- Targets: Reduce methane emissions by 30% by 2030 and 50% by 2050 in agriculture; 90% reduction in waste sector by 2050.
- Cross-cutting measures: Strengthen MRV systems, build capacity, mobilize resources, and integrate gender considerations.
This roadmap is a milestone in Cambodia’s climate strategy, offering practical solutions to reduce methane emissions while delivering co-benefits for health, food security, and sustainable development.
