G20 Special Webpage Now Live

In September, the Heads of State of the Group of 20 (G20) will meet at the G20 Summit in New Delhi, India, at a time when the world is simultaneously facing the crises of climate change and biodiversity loss, as well as the consequences of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Leading up to the Summit, the G20 Environment and Climate Ministers' meeting was convened on 28 July. IGES' G20 Special Webpage, now live, delves into the outcomes of the ministerial meeting, examining key trends and points related to climate, energy and environmental issues.

IGES and UN-Habitat Enter Partnership to Drive Transformative Change for Sustainable and Resilient Cities

IGES and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) have entered into a strategic partnership to accelerate sustainable waste management and combat climate change in cities. This collaboration is underpinned by the expertise of IGES's Centre Collaborating with UNEP on Environmental Technologies (CCET). CCET aims to enhance capacities of national and local governments in establishing, among others, integrated solid waste management systems, policies and technologies towards achieving a sound material recycling society, low-carbon growth, and a green economy. Under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between UN-Habitat and IGES, the inclusion of CCET's specialised expertise will significantly contribute to achieving the objectives of this partnership.

Launch of the ISAP e-newsletter

The International Forum for Sustainable Asia and the Pacific (ISAP) is an annual gathering designed to share insights and foster extensive discussions about sustainable development in Asia and the Pacific. This forum welcomes an array of leading experts and diverse stakeholders from international organisations, governments, the business sector and NGOs. Over the years, ISAP has served as a platform for contemporary discussions and knowledge exchange, engaging a wide range of practitioners. This year, we will be hosting face-to-face Plenary Sessions and Thematic Tracks on 19 December 2023. Some Thematic Tracks will also be held online before and after ISAP2023. In addition, we will be launching ISAP Plus, which are side events at significant international proceedings or conferences throughout the year. Detailed information about ISAP's schedule, content, dates, concept note and registration, will be periodically shared via this e-newsletter. Advancing the Net-Zero Agenda through Regional Cooperation in Green Hydrogen in Asia

Against the backdrop of the pressing global imperatives of decarbonisation and achieving net-zero emissions, green hydrogen has emerged as a pivotal player in the quest for clean energy solutions. This webinar explored the multifaceted landscape of green hydrogen, focusing on its significance in the context of the global energy transition and looking into what steps to follow so as to accelerate its pathway. The conversation further explored the diverse approaches taken by different countries and regions, including Central Asia, India, ASEAN nations, China and Japan, towards hydrogen-related initiatives, policies and collaborations. The panel also examined the techno-economic feasibility of green hydrogen, tackling essential challenges like production costs, technology constraints and infrastructure necessities.

High Level Talks on City-to-City Collaborations towards Zero Carbon Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur (KL) City, ahead of many cities in developing countries, declared its ambitious target to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. KL City has enjoyed a cooperative bond with Tokyo Metropolitan Government (TMG) since 2019, and efforts were enhanced in 2022 when Saitama City joined as a collaborative city. These three cities are determined to take the lead on decarbonisation in the region. At this event, held on 8 August, participating municipalities presented their initiatives towards carbon neutrality and explored opportunities for future collaboration. They also gained insights from the Sustainable Energy Development Agency, ASEAN Secretariat, JICA Malaysia, the Japanese Chamber of Trade & Industry, Malaysia and JETRO Kuala Lumpur as they discussed carbon neutrality in Malaysia and ASEAN, and shared their hopes for cooperation between KL City, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Saitama City.
