UNESCAP’s Asia and the Pacific SDG Progress Report 2021 analysed the status of SDG7 in the Asia-Pacific and concluded, “At the current pace of progress, the region is likely to miss the 2030 targets on access to energy services and energy efficiency. The share of renewable energy is decreasing in the region and more investment and international cooperation is required for the region to achieve its energy ambitions by 2030.”

To accelerate actions on SDG7 to achieve the 2030 goals and zero carbon by 2050, the High-Level Dialogue on Energy will be held at the summit level during the 76th session of the UN General Assembly in September 2021. The preparatory process began in Feb 2021, focusing on five themes: “energy access”, “energy transition”, “enabling SDGs through inclusive, just energy transitions”, “innovation, technology and data”, and “finance and investment”. The preparatory process involves global level theme champions, co-leading organisations, and technical working group members.

This side event shares lessons learned from experts in the Asia-Pacific, namely, 1) the key messages of the “Global Roadmap” to achieve SDG7 by 2030 and zero carbon by 2050 based on discussions in the five thematic working groups, 2) how to contribute to the “Energy Compact”, voluntary commitments to achieve SDG7 by 2030, and 3) how integrated approaches can boost SDG7 and climate-relevant SDG actions, especially in the Asia-Pacific.
We are looking forward to your active participation to boost SDG7 and climate-relevant SDG actions.
