Makati City City Voluntary Local Review of the Sustainable Development Goals

Insights of the Report

Makati City’s first Voluntary Local Review demonstrates its commitment to embedding the SDGs into long-term urban governance and planning. As the Philippines’ financial hub, Makati aligns its 2024–2034 vision with both global frameworks and national priorities, emphasising inclusive services, climate resilience, digital transformation and citizen empowerment. The review was developed through a highly participatory process involving the Mayor-led SDG Special Committee, civil society and multiple city departments. Through its Resilient MakatICiTy project and commitment to net-zero by 2050, Makati advances a data-driven, equity-focused approach to sustainable urban development.

City Profile

Makati City is the Philippines’ main financial and business hub, serving as the economic centre of Metro Manila. While its residential population stands at around 309,000 as of 2024, Makati’s daytime population swells to over 2.3 million. This dramatic influx of workers and visitors underscores the city’s importance and the demand for resilient, adaptive infrastructure and services. The urban core is dominated by high-density commercial zones, particularly in the Central Business District, while residential areas make up roughly a third of the land use. The city’s compact, transit-oriented layout supports walkability and green infrastructure as part of its shift toward sustainable urban design.
