IGES designated as PEMSEA’s Regional Center of Excellence in Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction

Announcement

On 26 August, IGES and PEMSEA (The Partnerships in Environmental Management for the Seas of East Asia) signed a MOU at a virtual ceremony. Its objective was to establish IGES as PEMSEA’s Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE) focusing on building capacities, sharing knowledge and providing scientific inputs to policies, programmes and projects aimed at enhancing Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Risk Reduction in the Seas of East Asia.

IGES was represented by its President, Kazuhiko Takeuchi, at the Tokyo Sustainability Forum in Japan, and PEMSEA was represented by its Executive Director, Aimee Gonzales, at PEMSEA’s headquarters in the Philippines. Organised by PEMSEA, the online ceremony also included two other organisations newly designated as PEMSEA’s partners: The Coastal and Ocean Management Institute (COMI) as a Regional Centre of Excellence in Sustainable Coastal Development, and the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA) as a Non-Country Partner.

At IGES, the Climate Change Adaptation Team in the Natural Resources and Ecosystem Services Unit will further develop and implement collaborative activities with PEMSEA that align with both organisations’ objectives, including work on existing initiatives and projects like the Asia-Pacific Adaptation Information Platform (AP-PLAT).

PEMSEA, located in Manila, is an international organisation established in 1993 “to foster and sustain healthy and resilient coasts and oceans, communities and economies across the Seas of East Asia through integrated management solutions and partnerships”.
