ASEAN SDGs-Frontrunner Cities Programme Phase 2

Workshop on Database Development for Disaster Management in Prik Sub-district, Songkhla Province of Thailand

Tuesday 29 August 2023, 9:00-12:00

Under the support of the ASEAN SDGs-FC Programme Phase 2, Prik Sub-district Municipality (Prik Municipality) organised a workshop on database preparation for disaster management.  This followed earlier workshops held in collaboration with other partners to review the existing data and gather information necessary for developing a digital platform for disaster management.

Conducted by Associate Professor Dr Somporn Khunwishit from the Faculty of Management Science, Prince of Songkla University, this workshop offered knowledge on disaster management database and the opportunity for local communities to brainstorm and prepare for a database under the Sendai Framework and principles and methods of the Thai Ministry of Interior’s Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation.

During the brainstorming session, the ‘Disaster Resilience Scorecard for Cities’ was used as a tool which is structured around “10 Essentials for Making Cities Resilient” in support of the implementation of the Sendai Framework.  In principle, the Scorecard requires residents to consider their cities’ hazards and risks and is intended to be used to lead cities towards improved disaster risk reduction, and to challenge complacency.

Under the ASEAN SDGs-FC Phase 2, Prik Municipality proposed to organise this activity to support its development of an IT system, using a geographic information system (GIS), for disaster management.  The database collection is currently underway.

ASEAN SDGs-FC Phase 2’s support is expected to contribute to strengthening the capacity of Prik Municipality, local communities and other key stakeholders in disaster risk reduction and management based on effective data and knowledge management, and the vision of Prik Municipality to become a Resilient City.

ASEAN SDGs-FC Phase 2 (Supporting Bottom-up Innovations for Addressing Land-based Plastic Marine Debris and Urban Resilience in ASEAN Cities) is supported by the Government of Japan through the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).  Implementation of ASEAN SDGs-FC Phase 2 through IGES is underway until August 2024.
