On 25-26 February 2020, the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and Ministry of the Environment, Japan (MOEJ) jointly organised a Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM) workshop on “Further understandings of Corresponding Adjustment and Reporting of Article 6 of Paris Agreement and seeking more opportunities with SDGs”, in Tokyo, Japan. Participants in the workshop included representatives from the 13 partner countries (Mongolia, Ethiopia, Kenya, Maldives, Vietnam, Lao PDR, Indonesia, Palau, Cambodia, Mexico, Chile, Thailand, Myanmar), and Sri Lanka, as the candidate country for the JCM partnership, along with relevant Japanese organizations. Throughout the workshop active participation by attendees from different countries, with different backgrounds, included valuable discussions and exchange of ideas, as well as reporting on progress of JCM projects, and findings and tips from project implementation. IGES led exercises about necessary arrangements for corresponding adjustment and reporting under the JCM, and gave presentations on JCM’s contribution to Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC), how to enhance the effectiveness of JCM Global Match, and findings on contributions to the SDGs resulting from JCM project implementation. In order to generate discussion and give more opportunities for connection among the participants, the organizers also formed them into small groups of 5 to 7 people each, mixed their members for each session, and made sure to keep sufficient time for this interaction. All participants strengthened their networks with representatives from other countries and gained useful ideas for future projects.
