Mr. ONO Hiroshi graduated from the Graduate School of Engineering, the University of Tokyo, and in 1987, he joined the Environment Agency of Japan (the current Ministry of the Environment). He held key positions at the Ministry including Director of the Environmental Transport Policy Division, Director of the Policy Planning Division of Waste Management and Recycling Bureau, Deputy Director-General for Global Environmental Affairs, Director-General of the Environmental Management Bureau, Director-General of the Global Environment Bureau, and Vice-Minister for Global Environmental Affairs. Following retirement, he served as Senior Advisor to the Minister of the Environment from July 2023, and then was appointed as Special Policy Advisor at IGES in January 2024. He took up the position of IGES Executive Director in September 2024.
