International Science and Policy Engagement

Role of IGES in the International Process

The triple environmental crisis is made more complex with land degradation, and so it is critical that collective and concerted efforts are made by multiple actors around the world. The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) is the main process under which international agreements are made on the actions and support needed to address climate change. Intergovernmental platforms, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), also play key roles in reviewing global knowledge on climate change and biodiversity, as well as informing policymakers so that they are able to make better policy decisions. IGES is involved in supporting these and other important international processes, thereby making critical policy impacts on international society.

Involvement in International Assessments

IGES Adaptation team actively participates in international assessments discussions on climate change adaptation; impacts, adaptation and vulnerabilities,; nexus assessment of the interlinkages between biodiversity, water, food, energy, and health; Global Environment Outlook. We engage as lead authors/review editors/contributing authors for global scientific assessments such as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Working Group II (Impacts, Adaptation and Vulnerability), Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES), Global Environment Outlook (GEO) from UNEP, high-impact international knowledge-gathering processes such as UNEP's adaptation gap reports and discussions on UNFCCC. We are also involved in international negotiations on adaptation at the UNFCCC as government delegation members.
