City Profile
Cascais is a Portuguese town in the sub-region of the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, belonging to the district of Lisbon and with a population of 214,158 inhabitants (2021). Its strategic position at the mouth of the Tagus River contributed to its importance, and it now boasts a vast architectural and military heritage. Due to its natural and scenic values, both the town and the municipality gained popularity, becoming the preferred destination for Portuguese and foreign elites from the 19th century onwards. The arrival and electrification of the railway were instrumental in the municipality's progress, being the main factor for its urbanisation from 1930 onwards. Since then, it has grown to establish itself as one of Lisbon's main suburbs and a leading tourist destination in the country.
