City Profile
Atenas is a canton in the province of Alajuela, Costa Rica, located in the western part of the Central Valley. It is divided into eight districts, with five being part of the Greater Metropolitan Area. The capital is the city of Atenas. The region, once known as Sabana Larga, began as a place providing food and shelter to ox-cart drivers transporting Costa Rica's "grain of gold," coffee, to Puntarenas. The canton's economy relies on agriculture, primarily coffee cultivation, alongside sugarcane, corn, beans and fruit. Livestock farming, trade and small-scale industries also contribute to the local economy.
