Voluntary Local Review 2023 of the City of Agios Dimitrios

Insights of the Report

In the rapidly evolving landscape of sustainable urban development, Agios Dimitrios is aiming for transformative change. As we look ahead to the year 2030, we recognise the immense challenges, as well as the opportunities that lie before us. The global community, under the banner of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, has set forth an ambitious blueprint for a more equitable, resilient and sustainable world. Our city, driven by a commitment to these principles, is embarking on a journey to shape its future. At the heart of our transformation lies a comprehensive and forward-looking strategy that paves our path towards 2030. This strategy is not merely a document but a pledge, a covenant between our city and its residents, stakeholders and partners. It envisions a city that is not only economically vibrant, but also socially inclusive, environmentally responsible, and culturally enriching.

Our strategy recognises that the challenges of our time, from climate change to social inequality, require bold and innovative solutions, and we are determined to be at the forefront of this transformative journey. This Voluntary Local Review refers to the years 2020-2021, a period that brought unprecedented challenges to our doorstep, testing the resilience of our city and its people. For this reason, we decided to proceed with our first VLR, as it gives us an opportunity to assess our progress with regards to the implementation of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially in a period of crisis. Within this review, we explore the initiatives and projects that have defined our city’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. From healthcare and social support to economic recovery, green transformation and education, we strived to leave no one behind.

Our experiences have reinforced our commitment to inclusivity and to addressing the root causes of inequality within our city.
