IGES Recommendations for HLPF 2019

The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is an international environmental policy research institution with offices throughout Asia and headquarters in Hayama, Japan. IGES partners with governments, international organisations, local governments, businesses and civil society, with the aim of facilitating a global transition to a sustainable future. IGES believes that such a transition requires integration across multiple issues and inclusion of diverse stakeholders. As outlined in this set of key priorities for HLPF 2019, integration and inclusion are also central to achieving the 1.5-degree target of the Paris Agreement, and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

What is HLPF?

The High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) is the main United Nations platform on sustainable development, mandated in 2012 by the outcome document of the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), The Future We Want.

Convened under the auspices of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), the Forum meets annually for eight days, including a three-day ministerial segment; the Forum also comes together every four years at the level of Heads of State and Government for two days under the auspices of the General Assembly.

HLPF’s first meeting was held on 24 September 2013. Replacing the United Nations Commission on Sustainable Development, which had met annually since 1993, HLPF is central to the follow-up and review of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UN General Assembly resolution 70/299 provides further guidance on the Forum, as well as the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.
