IGES Participates in 8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific: “State of the 3Rs in Asia and the Pacific” Report Launched
13 April 2018
From 9-12 April 2018, IGES participated in the 8th Regional 3R Forum in Asia and the Pacific, held in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, co-organized by the Government of India’s Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), Japan’s Ministry of the Environment (MOEJ), and the United Nations Centre for Regional Development (UNCRD). Organized under the theme of “Achieving Clean Water, Clean Land and Clean Air through 3R and Resource Efficiency- A 21st Century Vision for Asia-Pacific Communities” the event also served as the launch for a new joint IGES-UNCRD publication entitled, State of the 3Rs in Asia and the Pacific, generously supported by MOEJ. Developed in coordination with a key expert panel of waste management specialists from across Asia, the report comprises an indicator-based assessment of 3R policies in 11 countries including Japan, China, India, Thailand as well as the Pacific Island region. By utilizing comparable measures for waste prevention, recycling, biomass utilization, marine plastics prevention, and e-waste management, in line with Sustainable Development Goal 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), the report presents a headline review of progress made on waste and resource efficiency throughout Asia and the Pacific, and defines 9 concrete recommendations towards further improving waste management in the region.
In addition to addressing emerging waste issues such as marine pollution as viewed through the lens of various policy responses, State of the 3Rs in Asia and the Pacific offers a cross-country examination and comparison of different waste categories and criteria illustrated through innovative data visualization techniques, making it a must-read report for technical experts and practitioners interested in waste management, circular economy, and the current status of SDG 12 in Asia and Pacific countries. The report will be regularly updated with an aim to guide future policy discussions and monitoring on how 3R policies, strategies and actions aligned with SDG 12 can be successfully scaled up and delivered to foster resource efficient, circular and low carbon economies across the region.
