【Thematic Tracks in Focus】
No.1 Most Pre-Registered Session
Thematic Track 10
“The Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework, and What Else to Expect at CBD COP15” on 2 December, 11:00-12:00 (Japan Time)
This session is particularly timely among ISAP2022 sessions. It explains the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15), which starts on 7 December in Montreal, Canada. When we think of environmental issues, we tend to focus greatly on climate change-related issues such as extreme weather events and crop damage, which are easy to imagine. However, the issue of biodiversity, which is in constant decline due to human activities, is also deeply rooted and closely related to climate change. Nature-based solutions (NbS), which aim to be solutions for multiple issues, are also gaining traction. Please take a look at the progress of international discussions on this issue.

No.2 Most Pre-Registered Session
Thematic Track 2
“Climate Change Actions and Regional Sustainable Development Synergies” on 29 November, 13:30-15:00 (Japan Time)
It is actually at the local level that actions to curb climate change are being implemented because the city is the centre of human activity. The same applies to the realisation of the SDGs. Urbanisation is progressing at a very fast pace in all parts of the world. The population grows often without effective infrastructures in place, causing various problems related to the SDGs, including environmental issues. Cities around the world are already attempting to take measures in this regard. This session invites policymakers, local government officials and researchers who are struggling daily to find solutions that tackle climate change and achieve the SDGs at the same time. Don't miss the many case studies from cities around the world!

No.3 Most Pre-Registered Session
Thematic Track 15
“Expectations and Challenges for International Cooperation to Tackle Plastic Pollution” on 5 December, 17:30-19:00 (Japan Time)
While it may already be well known that plastics are destroying nature, humankind still produces a very large number of plastic products and plastic waste continues to grow. It is therefore natural to think of a need for rule-making. However, in order to create common international rules, it is necessary to set numerical targets and limits, such as how much plastic is mass-produced worldwide and how much it must be reduced in order to achieve meaningful results for the environment. It is relatively easy to think on the scale of a town or a country, but difficult to think on the global scale. Nonetheless, the international community has decided to enter into negotiations to create a legally binding global instrument on plastic pollution. The first round of negotiations is actually scheduled to take place a week before this session. Please watch this timely session on the international fight against plastic pollution.
